Kīlauea is located on Kauai's northeastern shore, with Kalihiwai to the west and the Pacific Ocean to the north. The community's south side is bordered by Hawaii Route 56, which leads west 7 miles to Hanalei and east 6 miles to the Moloaa area, which includes the Moloaa Forest Reserve and overlooks Moloaa Bay.
Kīlauea is a tiny, attractive village on the Garden Isle's beautiful North Shore. Because of its humble beginnings as a sugar cane plantation, this small hamlet has grown into an ethnically diversified, vibrant community. The Kīlauea Sugar Plantation thrived in the late 1800s, and laborers came from all over the world to work there, including Portugal and Japan.
