"The salt bed" or "the salt-encrusted land" is what Kealia implies. Historically, heavy surf and high tides swamped flat, low-lying coastline locations on a regular basis. Often, shallow ponds would form. The water that had inundated the flats would evaporate after several days of exposure to the sun, leaving only a thin layer or perhaps a pocket of salt.
During the winter months, Kealia's long stretch of white sand beach is ideal for beach strolling and whale watching. Kealia Area is a prominent surfing beach that is prone to both open ocean and wind surge. On calmer days, the north end of the beach is suitable for swimming and boogie boarding.
